#IranElection

by Tommy

I’m going to honest with you. I don’t know everything about this. I know that some people think the election was rigged. I know there are riots ongoing, and I know that Twitter is supposedly playing a massive part in it.

One thing that people are doing is turning their avatar a lovely shade of snot-green in some sort of show of solidarity. I don’t get this. There’s showing solidarity, but then there’s just showing your peripheral awareness of something.

It’s bandwagoning, a practice oft seen on Twitter. Remember around Christmas when you could get snowflakes and santa hats on your avatar?

Look, I know I hold the unpopular opinion here. I know that people like to feel like they’re making a difference.

Yes, you’re raising awareness, but just of #IranElection. I now know there’s something going on in Iran, nothing more.

Your action (of raising awareness) is good, and one I support. Your method (of turning yourself green) is not.

This is a rant against green avatars, nothing more.
