Young Scientist Day One

by Tommy

Sitting in the lobby of Bewleys in Ballsbridge in the cushiest armchair ever. If this post doesn’t go out it’s because I’ve been swallowed up by it.

Left at about 9:45. Arrived in the RDS where I got myself registered.

Set up stand – this was great. My project was one single A0 sheet that was laminated. I just stuck sticky velcro on the back and popped it up, and I got great kicks out of watching some people prit-sticking bits of glitter/A4 pages/whatever onto backgrounds :)*

Today was the quietist I’ve ever seen the RDS, because it’s the first time I’ve been at the exhibition when it wasn’t open to the public. Normally, you can hardly move for the throngs of people peering intently at the different projects. Today though, you had room to actually swing a cat, in fact, you could swing many cats.

Opening ceremony (first time I’d been to that too) contained motorbikes and wheels of death (pics on my phone, which is upstairs in the room) and also some giant robot thing that cried real tears. Anyone got any rust protection?

When we got back to our exhibits, we found those little red cards of death. Or rather, the ones who signaled death. The ones that told you when your death.. OK, I’m exaggerating wildly, which, in my defence, is not something I do often on this blog.

They were cards that told us when our first round of judging would be.

“Exhibit #2006 will be judged by XYZ at 4:45″

The guy was delayed by another student so at a few minutes to five, I got two hands on my shoulder and a “Hello There!” that made me jump. T’was my judge.

About 15-20 minutes later we finished up. He wrote on my comments page that Very articulate + interesting project, very professionally presented and well laid out.

He said, as he got up that A) I had a very nice smile and B) that one should leave someone’s company better off then when they entered it. He said that it didn’t happen often but that it had happened to him when he met me.

How cool is that?! 8-)

If you’re one of the seemingly bajillion of people coming to see me tomorrows, (don’t take it that I dislike it, I love meeting people!), here’s how to find me.

I’m exhibit number 2006. In the
social and behavioral sciences section. If you enter that area (it’s marked with a big blue banner), you’ll find me 2 or 3 rows down, faced toward the entrance, the second project
