Home again Home again Jiggity jig!

Tag: UncategorizedTommy @ 10:01 am

I haseth returned!

I’m back from a very enjoyable foray into the country to visit cousins. Got home this morning at about 8:30AM to find the house alive, almost. John’s still asleep and probably will be for most of the day. Mis padres are wide awake as per usual. You might have found out via Twitter that I recently started using Net News Wire. Basically it’s to keep up with all the new blogs I started following in and around the Web Awards. Of course, some strange alternative version of Murphy’s Law comes into play that as soon as I set the thing up, I leave for 2 days. On opening my laptop this morning and connecting it to the intertubes I found a lovely pile of about 30 new feeds. Lovely. The figure is small if you compare it to one of the really serious bloggers. Damien, didn’t you tell me you had about 300?

In Other News

I’m so gonna set the Rick Roll song, “Never Gonna Give You Up”* as my phone’s ringtone. I’ve had some pretty crazy ringtones, that alien one that went “la-la-la-la-la” that Livies showed me** or “You Can’t always Get What You Want” during my short tenure of owning an iPhone.

*It’s not Rick Rolling someone if you don’t disguise the link!!

** Liv, do you still know where to find that song? :P

Just got the OST

Tag: UncategorizedTommy @ 9:15 pm

So, I’m a self confessed 007 fanatic and also tech geek. These things can combine together to form me downloading the new Quantum of Solace soundtrack

At 83.3 MBs, it’s not going to break the proverbial bank. Even with John’s attempts to download every film ever made (or so I see) we’re still only about 2/3 of our cap. We’ll be grand, and anyway, this is my first download this month, out of the 500 MB that Patrick allows me per month.

I’ll start listening to it in a while and post my thoughts and maybe even a top 5 (if you’re very very good! :P)

–In other news, I’m buggering off to the country tomorrow. Will have laptop and internet but I won’t be active. See you in 2.5ish days.

Captain Tommy, over n’ out!

Thoughts on Trust Tommy being selfhosted

Tag: UncategorizedTommy @ 12:31 pm

So, I -Trust Tommy- has been self hosted about a week now, it’s been great and definitely one decision I haven’t looked back on.

There’s a visible sense of professionalism when you give out the address as .com rather than .blogspot. Having a domain separates the serious bloggers from those jumping on the blogging bandwagon.* People take you more seriously as you hand them the torn piece of paper with the URL scribbled on it. It’s also easier to remember and type.

Wordpress isn’t half the piece of dog dropping I expected it to be. It’s awfully clean (more than Blogspot could ever be or was) and everything is generally very nice. Tommy is a happy boy.

John’s prophesy that in tinkering with the server, he may send TT crushing to the ground hasn’t -so far- happened, I don’t think. I haven’t seen any downtime, have you? (and, with it as my homepage, I’d see it every time either Safari or Firefox booted up) but still, everyone, on my count, turn clockwise, spit, throw salt over your left shoulder and rotate 360 degrees, just to combat the jinx I just put on the site.

The iTheme (which John says is too “Apple-y”) has met the great WordPress beast head on and is rising to the challenge admirably, and I’m very pleased with it.

Kudos to blogger though, they kept me safe, never lost any posts and even shipped all posts across to WP contentedly. Thanks!

___

*That _isn’t_ to say those who aren’t self hosted are any less quality bloggers. I know tons of people still on WP or BlogSpot who are better bloggers than I am, or could ever aspire to be

Irish Web Awards Mixup

Tag: UncategorizedTommy @ 10:36 am

So, in The Wild Onion, on the High Street in Limerick, as I waited for my breakfast, I grabbed the nearest paper to me and began leafing through it.

I saw the article pictured and did a double take. A real, actual double take.

What’s this? Something about the Irish Web Awards in the Leader?? And what’s this “Angel Campaign?

As I read through the article, I discovered the IWA it spoke of was actually the Irish Wheelchair Association

Oh God They Have

Right, so, Scrabble is meant to a fun family activity. No, not in the Collison household. Here, it’s a vicious game where one must better another. We played a teams game, myself and John against Mom and Dad. As I dubbed, “antique vs. modern”

Also, what does it say about a family when you record scores on an iPhone?

For those interested, John and I won 364 to 287

Epic Happiness

Tag: UncategorizedTommy @ 10:06 pm

So, those who follow me on Twitter, you’ll know I’m now on mid term break, and this makes me happy

Today’s been a fantastic day. Not only is it the first day of midterm, but I’m getting through so many things I need to get through. Current book is “The Boy In The Striped Pyjames” and I ate my way through half of that this morning. Film is Amadeus, which is about the life of Mozart. This sounds boring, but really isn’t. The actors are superb and I swear to -the drumming- God that I know the actor who plays the Emperor. He was in something. I KNOW it!

3rd piece of awesomeness concerns debating. The ‘College’s debating society met each week and they chose the team for the Junior team for the VEC society. (Secondary school debating competition).

Guess who got on the team? Yup, yours truly.

So, the Junior Team has 2 third years and 2 first years. I’m one of the first years, and I know the other three. On the whole team, there’s 3 boys and 1 girl.

For whatever reason, I was approached by the debating teacher in the corridor and told, and it was all unofficial and casual. I was the second last told, the girl was last, and she got the official version, the whole

“Would XYZ please report to reception

Over the intercom

There was the usual reply from people in the class of “Oooh! Somebody’s in trouble!” and the like, and she left. She returned a few minutes later, made straight for me and whispered excitedly “I got the team!” :)

Good day to be had for all, methinks

By the way, the motion of our first debate is that THE IRISH DO TOO MUCH DRINKING AND NOT ENOUGH THINKING. Your thoughts?

Being bored on YouTube

Tag: UncategorizedTommy @ 6:07 pm

I don’t know all that much about ovens, or Elton John, but I guess the man is fairly deserving of recognition after what you’re about to see. Has anyone ever sung about your oven manual?

Pianos reminded me of this video from one of the greatest comedian/pianists Bill Bailey. From his DVD show in…2004 I think. Ambulance Sirens…

And perhaps most weirdly of all. I have no idea how in (no pun intended) heaven how I found this. No, I’m not looking to become a born again Christian, honest

Biggest thing that strikes me is the fact there’s a lovely ornate grand piano in the room, and they play on this tinny old keyboard…

Pundit Kitchen

Tag: UncategorizedTommy @ 6:50 pm

So, we’re all familiar with lolcats and it’s (?, again. Is it it’s or its?) spinoff hot dog, but the lesser known spin off is Pundit Kitchen

As lolcats deal with sticking captions of varying amounts of humour to pictures of cats, and HotDog the same with dogs, PK does it with pictures of the US election and other political photos.

It’s nowhere near as good as Lolcats but there’s some good stuff on it, such as….

Your too late for some peace n’ love

Tag: UncategorizedTommy @ 7:10 am

Back on October 13th, former Beatle drummer Ringo Starr issued a ’serious message’ through a video on his site, saying that he was just ‘too busy’ for signing autographs and anything after the 20th of October would be thrown out.

Seems a wee bit silly to me. I mean, I understand it’s his own choice and all that, but A) surely this meant 10x more fanmail coming to him from die hard fans trying to get his auto before the deadline, and B) He’s 69, what’s he doing that requires so much attention? He banged some saucepans back in the 60s for the beatles, but didn’t Paul McCartney say….

Interviewer: So, is Ringo the best drummer in the world?

Paul McCartney: *laughs*. Lemme say this. Ringo ain’t the best drummer in the Beatles!

Hmm, says a bit, doesn’t it? But, again, he’s his own person. It’s his decision.

Please do Thomas the Tank Engine again!!
