School: An Update

Starting a new school was fun today.
It was a wee bit scary. It being a much bigger school than I’m used to. But, in the end, the sense of finally being here prevailed.
I’m in Deirdre, where John was when he was in 1st year. Good omen?
Very fun prayer service in the morning too
In short, a good day

My iPhone is working out well. Is nice! :P
Back to school on Tuesday, but I think it’ll just be a complete doss. We’ve been told not to bring any books in, just copybooks and pens.
Reading through a PDF of the iphone manual. It’s brilliantly simple. In the “What’s in the box” chapter. Column 1: What is it? Column 2: What do I do with it?

I know have a fully working iPhone. Jay and I worked long(ish) into the night fixing it and being the big legend he is managed to fix it. It rocks :D
In Other News
The weather is still awesome. By which I mean it’s raining and cold. Sorry, I should’ve mentioned this before. I hate warm sunny weather. So when I hear people bitching while changing for swimming about how “it’s a fecking disgrace” that the weather hasn’t been sunny any day this year, I feel the urge to pipe up “no it isn’t! It’s wonderful!” :D. By the way, yes, I do know I’m completely crazy. I’ve lost all my marbles, I’m nutty, nutty as a fruitcake, off my rocker, not right in the head, round/around the bend, raving mad, batty, bonkers, cuckoo, loopy, ditzy, loony, bananas, loco, with a screw loose, touched, gaga, not all there, out to lunch, crackers, nutso, out of one’s tree and wacky!*
*Thank you Apple’s thesaurus for those synonyms :P

Still locked. Jay is still asleep and will be until tomorrow, I’m guessing. I know this is about the fifth time today I’ve said this, but I think I know the reason that iTunes is rejecting the custom restore, and I’m currently rectifying that.
Pa said I could call him in the morning (VC time). It’s now 8:53 there, so I doubt he’d be awake. If you are Pa, give me a sign, an email or something :)

Even in the knowledge that my brothers will call me a ludraman, I’m going to tell you the story…
I gots an iphone yesterday, and it was awesome, my SIM worked, I put some music on it, it played. Life was Good
Apart from the fact that there was 2.34 GBs taken up by something catagorized as “other”. I couldn’t think what this was at first, but then realised it was Wikipedia. I wanted to remove it to make more room for music, and movies, but I couldn’t
Skip ahead to 10 PM last night. I was looking through the internet when I noticed that iPhone 2.0 was available. There is also a feature in iTunes to completely restore the iphone, removing everything off it.
I went with that, and, as I expected, the phone locked itself. I downloaded pwnage tool, but couldn’t find the restore files. I was looking for two bloody hours for those files, before going to bed, defeated.
Woke up 20 minutes ago. In my more awake state, I found the necessary files, and am now building the unlocking doodah.

1. Macbook Airs *really* aren’t all they’re cracked up to be
I only realised today that they don’t actually have a CD drive, so the only way you can open a CD or DVD is by connecting an external drive, which takes up all one of the USB ports. The ports themselves are in such a finicky position it’s hard to access them anyway. The weight of it means that you could push it off it’s desk while trying to connect something up to it. It only has one USB port, which means no external monitors or anything like that. No ethernet for fast copying over of stuff, and no “Y” connecters. (I don’t know the actual name of these, only that old old iPods use them).
That said, the weight of it makes it lovely for people on the move, like Dad, and the charger cable is a great improvement.
2. Contrary to what you might think, there aren’t a lot of places to stick apple stickers on drums
As is tradition, when someone in the family gets a laptop, two apple logo stickers are included, and I get them, and I put them on my drum kit, to create the iDrum. :P
Now, a drum kit being as big as it is, you’d think there’d be tens if not hundreds of places to affix the aforementioned stickers, but there aren’t. You can’t put them on the heads, because that’s where you hit. You can’t put them on the rims, because they’re out of sight, and you can’t put them on the cymbals, because you’d beat the living **** out of them before you stopped messing around and actually started playing properly.
This leaves only one place, the bass drum. So, I have 2 on the front, for product placement when I’m on stage, and two on the inside top, which is a place hard to describe, and would need a picture to show you. I’ll take one tomorrow.
3. Pages and Numbers pwn Word and Excel

Twitter has announced that it is dropping the receiving SMS feature that IMO made it great. And since then, the blogosphere has literally exploded by being inundated with posts about the move.
It’s doing ” the responsible thing” this morning, by shutting down it’s imcoming SMSs to mobile twitter users outside the US, Canada and India.
In fairness, it’s also promised to negotiate with local mobile tariffs to ensure cheaper sending-of-SMSs to the UK number.
I read through the list of comments on the (badly named) GetSatasfaction forum and one jumed out at me
So, basically. give us specifics. WHEN do you plan to have IM back? WHEN do you plan to negotiate with the carriers in each country? What STAGE are these negoations at? How can WE help (eg, ringing up tech support and asking for these services)? WHEN will IM be likely to be coming back? Is it actually DEAD forever?
I too would like some idea of a timeline, knowing when each of the things is at least likely to make a return. I also for one herald the slightest bit of hope that there’ll be an Irish twitter number to text, as I have free calls to any network. I fear, however, that:
Before we go into more detail, here’s the good news. Twitter will be introducing several new, local SMS numbers in countries throughout Europe in the coming weeks and months. These new numbers will make Twittering more accessible for all the folks who have been using SMS to send long-distance updates through our UK number.
is just to be able to have the heading of “some good news, and some bad”
The other comments are mixed, ranging from people saying how twitter have just turned their back on loyal twitterers and given them a royal kick in the nuts, to more level headed folk trying to show how twitter was always a free service for people, and there was never any obligation.
My view? I think that yeah, twitter just got 90% less useful for me.

Just in the door from Sligo. Party went well, lots of really interesting people.
Why is it that I despise car journeys so much? I think it def wins the award for myv least favourite method of travel, although planes may scoop that award quickly.
Ordered the complete uber massive sweeney script from Savins too. Between 90 and 100 euro. Worth every cent.
Dogs doing well, ever increasing in size, as always

This was meant to be an email, but the videos didn’t work, so here it is.
Happy Birthday to John
Another Year has rolled on
He’s just turned 18
*sniff* Growing up, is our John
Some beer in his hand.
Cheap stuff from Mace
But even with it all
There’s a smile on his face
He’s learning to fly
like some guy in the sky
But it’s his idea of fun
And he’s mom and dad’s son
So we love him :-)
OK, I know, I can’t say it half as well as I should, so I’ll just let these guys do it ;-)
The second one’s quite good :-)
